ADHD, Emotions and the QII Conundrum

What comes to mind when I mention the term 'QII'?

If you are a leader or decision-maker with ADHD, what likely comes to mind is frustration and pain. QII or Quad II refers to one quadrant of the Eisenhower Matrix particularly vexing for Global Creatives - the important/not urgent quadrant. ADHD leaders are masterful in the urgent quadrants but struggle to access important but not urgent items at work and at home - items like promoting and supporting talent or submitting that proposal no one is asking for, re-applying the sealant that will extend the life of your deck. We know we need to take advantage of QII but have yet to consistently crack the walls of this quadrant of work. I call this the 'QII Conundrum' and it is a unique challenge for all who struggle with ADHD.

I always thought the “QII Conundrum” was one of time, attention and structure, especially building out useful activation and engagement strategies over our time ‘horizon’. I’ve recently learned through my own professional development that it is a matter of emotion too. Emotions drive our attention, our decisions and ultimately our actions. We assign value by how we feel about something. The connection between emotional regulation and ADHD is well known.
